Precision Manufacturing: The Steadfast Choice of an Automotive Lighting Dynasty

08/06/2026

In the grand narrative of the automotive industry, the car headlamp has evolved from a simple lighting component into the "eye"that defines a vehicle's character and a smart module carrying cutting-edge technology. In Yantai (Shandong) and Taizhou (Jiangsu),China,a company with nearly five decades of history — TMING Precision — is writing a chapter about heritage, challenge, and certainty together with its long-term partner,WINTEC.

As a precision optical component, the automotive headlight faces an industry threshold that few outside it know well:for a single light guide, demanding clients require segmented electrical testing during inspection, with each segment requiring an optical luminance value above 5,000. If uniformity falls short by even a fraction, the batch fails inspection. And delivery timelines are tight — there is no time for rework.

There are not many injection moulding companies that can take orders like this.

TMING is one of them.

From Bicycle Tail Lamps to Smart Headlamps:An Industrial Leap Across Three Generations

The story of TMING is a condensed history of China's manufacturing upgrade.

It began in the 1970s,when founder Qiyu YOU produced reflective tail lamps for the iconic domestic bicycles "Phoenix"and "Forever". In that era,"durability"and "functionality"were the highest principles, embedding a primal belief in stability and precision into the company's DNA. At the turn of the century,as China's automotive industry took off,TMING accelerated under the leadership of the second-generation leader,Weidong YOU,who deliberately chose the most difficult path — transparent,thick-walled,reflective components — honing true precision manufacturing capability behind the scenes. Facing the wave of new energy vehicles, the third-generation leader,Shanshan YOU,led TMING to another leap forward. In 2021,a brand-new smart factory in Taizhou,Jiangsu, commenced production, serving tier-one suppliers like Xingyu Automotive Lighting Systems, with end customers including BMW,Audi,NIO,Li Auto, and others.

Yet market recognition is a stern test of capability. The higher the calibre of customers served, the more extreme the manufacturing challenges become.

In the injection moulding workshop of the Taizhou factory, more than twenty WINTEC machines stand in compact rows — from the 130-tonne e-win all-electric (for small light guides) to the 1,050-tonne t-win hydraulic two-platen (for large headlamp/rear lamp,thick-walled,light guides).

Why WINTEC?

The Three Engineering Challenges of Automotive Lighting Manufacturing

To understand TMING's choice, one must first understand automotive lighting optics. Modern high-end automotive lighting, including headlamps, sit at the pinnacle of precision injection moulding. Among them, light guides and thick-walled parts belong to the most difficult category:

Challenge One:Optical Uniformity. The demand for precision and stability is quantified by "segmented electrical testing". Each segment of a light guide must achieve a luminance value above 5,000.

Challenge Two:Internal Stress. The holding pressure window for thick-walled parts must be controlled with extreme accuracy. Too slow, and sink marks appear;too fast, and internal stress builds up. Internal stress is a hidden defect in optical parts — electrical testing may not catch it all,but it reveals itself gradually under real-world operating conditions after installation.

Challenge Three:Weight Variation. A difference of just a few grammes per shot causes the optical data of an entire batch to drift. This means the equipment must not only "produce the part",but also "produce every shot identically"— consistently, across long production runs.

Each of these challenges demands a convergence of equipment, process, and experience. Injection moulding machine, moulds, materials, auxiliary equipment, environmental parameters — if any link falls short, the whole chain fails. This is precisely why there are many factories capable of producing standard headlamp housings, but far fewer that can master transparent,thick-walled or light guides.

A Procurement Philosophy:Configuration First

TMING's partnership with WINTEC began in Yantai.

In 2014,when the ENGEL Changzhou plant opened and launched the WINTEC brand,it caused a stir in the industry. As a long-time ENGEL customer,Weidong YOU visited Changzhou with his daughter Shanshan to find out whether WINTEC could truly deliver ENGEL-level performance and quality while adapting to their application needs — at a more competitive price point.

Weidong YOU is a technologist at heart. When selecting equipment,he doesn't ask about price first — he asks about configuration. "The ‘brian’ is from whom? How is the injection unit configured?"He believes that ENGEL's eight decades of proven experience and data represent an insurmountable advantage.

Shanshan YOU recalls:"My father, along with our technical experts and myself, went to the WINTEC Changzhou plant. We examined their manufacturing processes, workmanship, materials, quality inspection standards, and thoroughly evaluated all aspects of machine performance. It was clear — this was ENGEL-grade output."

Thus,TMING became the first customer in Shandong Province to purchase a WINTEC machine. After years of use,its process stability, repeatable precision, and low failure rate all passed the test. When the Taizhou factory needed equipment in 2021,the injection moulding workshop was equipped with more than twenty machines — all from WINTEC.

iQ Weight Control:Locking Down Weight Variation

TMING takes a holistic approach to equipment.

"Does buying a machine with certain specifications guarantee identical output? No. Moulds, auxiliary equipment, data, software, automation, materials, environment, process — achieving excellent products and stable high-quality production capability is a holistic system",says Weidong YOU. That is why TMING values not just the injection moulding machines from ENGEL and WINTEC,but also the systematic support in training, process engineering, software, and data connection with MES and other systems.

Among these, the iQ weight control is a critical enabler for meeting the precision and stability requirements of optical parts. In thick-walled part production, ambient humidity, batch variations in material, and workshop temperature fluctuations all cause slight weight drift from shot to shot. iQ weight control monitors key parameters in real time and makes automatic adjustments once stable production conditions are established. "When the environment changes,or the material changes, the machine adjusts itself — ultimately achieving a yield rate above 98%,with every segment passing the electrical test at 5,000 or above. This is why customers trust TMING with their most demanding orders,"says General Manager Bin TENG.

The TMING Calculation:Total Cost of Ownership Matters More Than Machine Price

Speaking of profitability,Weidong YOU cuts straight to the point:"It's hard to squeeze profit from customers these days. Quality must be high to earn a seat at the table, but prices need to be competitive, delivery must be fast, and operations must remain stable over the long term to survive. So where does profit come from?If a factory wants profit,it has to ‘produce’ it from your own production management."

"'Time calculated by the second, weight calculated by the gramme, profit calculated by the cent'— these three principles my grandfather set for TMING are still what we live by today,"adds Shanshan YOU. "When purchasing equipment, you can't just look at configuration;you have to calculate total cost of ownership. The price for the machine is only one factor. Yield rate, energy consumption, downtime, data integration, training — all of it must be factored in. What's the cost of losing a customer due to instability? What's the cost of a single rejected shot? What's the penalty for delaying delivery?Cheap equipment often carries hidden costs that add up to more spending in the end. With good equipment,a two-percentage-point improvement in yield rate translates directly into profit."

Data from TMING's Taizhou plant tells the story:transparent thick-walled parts consistently achieve a yield rate above 98%;light guides pass every segment of electrical testing at 5,000 or above;energy consumption has shown significant savings over more than a decade of operation;WINTEC machines have recorded "near-zero failures",significantly improving overall equipment effectiveness;data interfaces integrate seamlessly with TMING's self-developed MES;and training goes beyond basic machine operation and maintenance to cover how to use the equipment to optimise processes.

"For TMING,WINTEC is not just a supplier — it is more like a partner,"says Shanshan YOU.

The Compound Interest of Three Generations

The generation of Weidong YOU took on the most difficult challenge — transparent,thick-walled,reflective components — and built a fortress with technology. The generation of Shanshan YOU has established the "three outlooks"of detail, data, and vision, pushing quality ever higher and deepening the company's foundations.

WINTEC's place in this system is defined by ENGEL's eight decades of technological heritage,by iQ weight control's ability to stabilise weight amid fluctuations, and by the confidence that every product coming off the line in Taizhou can withstand any customer's scrutiny.

From the story of TMING,we see that in the vast journey of high-end manufacturing towards intelligence and digitalisation, the most reliable helm often comes from the deepest commitment to the fundamentals of manufacturing — the long-term process stability and precision engineering capability that equipment provides, quantifiable and trustworthy.

From Yantai to Taizhou, from one machine to more than twenty. Three generations spending half a century on one thing — stability is the greatest compound interest.
